Welcome to the first in a new video series called “Ask a Recruiter.” In this series, you’ll get answers from real Progressive recruiters on a wide range of job seeker topics.

For our first episode, we asked a Progressive recruiter whether it’s possible for educators to make the switch to insurance. Take a look!

Ask a Recruiter: Can educators switch careers to insurance?

Christian:

Hi, it’s Christian with Progressive. And this is our “Ask a Recruiter” video series, where we ask real recruiters for their thoughts on topics in the job market.

Christian:

In this installment, we asked a Progressive recruiter, “Is it possible to switch from a career in education to insurance?”

Christian:

Here’s what they had to say.

Morgan (Progressive recruiter):

The answer is “Yes!”

Morgan:

In fact, I don’t think many educators realize just how well-suited they are for some of our most crucial roles here at Progressive.

Morgan:

One job that instantly pops into my mind is our claims adjuster trainee position. I should know—I spend most of my time recruiting for this role!

Morgan:

For starters, it’s not a job that requires you to have an insurance background. What it does require is critical thinking skills and, after demonstrating proficiency and becoming a claims generalist associate, the ability to make independent decisions in a timely manner…things educators do every day.

Morgan:

Educators handle a large number of tasks on a daily basis. They also have to adapt quickly on the fly. Claims adjuster trainees learn how to utilize similar skills. Whether it’s working through multiple claims or resolving an unexpected customer issue, successful claims adjuster trainees learn how to balance a busy workload while delivering great customer service.

Morgan:

Both educators and claims adjuster trainees also know the value of clear and timely communication. Similar to how K-12 educators contact parents with updates on their student’s progress, claims adjuster trainees learn how to regularly communicate with customers regarding their claim. They also become accustomed to having direct conversations while remaining empathetic, objective, and professional(something educators are also familiar with).

Morgan:

What I’m getting at is this: As an educator, your transferable skills might make you a good candidate for a role at Progressive. It’s exciting! There are a lot of opportunities to grow your career with Progressive.

Morgan:

If you’re interested in applying for a claims adjuster trainee position, here are some skills that you should consider highlighting on your resume:

Morgan:

Customer service

Communication

Negotiation

Time management and

Decision - making skills

Morgan:

These align well with the competencies for claims adjuster trainees. Additionally, it’s a good idea to provide examples from your work history of how you’ve demonstrated these skills.

Morgan:

Hopefully this points you in the right direction.Best of luck in your career search!

Christian:
